Top Commenters – Are you on top?
Posted on 5 September 2008

As you may know, I’ve recently changed the theme of Emz Design, and with that I lost the Top Commenters widget. You will pleased to know that the Top Commenters widget is now back!

Why is this good for you?
Basically, if you’re a Top Ten Commenter for the current month, your name with a link to your site is placed in the sidebar of this site. The sidebar is on every page of this site, so effectively your link is added to 50+ pages and posts just by leaving a comment here and there.

PR from each of these pages will be leaked to your site which will help you gain a higher PR.

Great! Anymore sites like these?
Yes! After browsing Thou Shall Blog I noticed a page that has an entire list of blogs with the Top Commenters widget. Visit this page: The Best Places to Get Quality Backlink to view this list.

But don’t visit there until you’ve commented a little here ;)

Where can I download the Top Commenters Plugin?
You can download the plugin here: Top Commenters Plugin.

Once you’ve installed the plugin you have to apply a bit of code to your sidebar (or wherever you want to place it). This code is here:

<?php if(function_exists('ns_show_top_commentators')) { ?>
<li>
<ul><?php ns_show_top_commentators(); ?></ul>
</li>
<?php } ?>

All you need to do is Copy and Paste that into your sidebar and it will work.

41 comments - Post a comment?

Thanks for the shout, Emma. Welcome to the club. It’s a nice gesture on your part to reward a little piece of your real estate for your active readers and commenters.

great resource. i have always been a fan of the top commentator plugin for wordpress. But unfortunately I have failed to put it in action. The plugin is installed but working I don’t know why. But anyway, I will surely love to comeback and post a new comment once you have a new article. Cheers.

Hi “Web Site Design and SEO” – your Top Commenters plugin may not work because you need to apply some code to your sidebar.

I have edited this post to include this code so please take a look to see if that helps.

And thanks for your comment.

Wow.Thanks Emma. I will add that now to my sidebar hopefully it will work.Thank you very much.

Nice post! Top commentators is definitely a great WordPress Widget. Since I used it, my blog receive more comments and many people suscribed to my rss feed.

I don’t want to look spammy by leaving urls in the comments, but I wrote a few related article that you should definitely check out.

Have a nice day!

Hi Emma,

Happy to see that you are back in the swing of things and posting on here again. We all need a breather sometime.
I actually just finished reading a long post about the top commenter plugin on bloggingtips. Their post had to do with this plugin in addition to taking out the nofollow tag and only linking i guess to the top commenters.

What i gathered from that post as well as many other I have read are that this may get you more comments but will greatly diminish the quality of the comments and worse the conversation.

There is nothing that irritates me more then when we are having a great conversation on a post and these spammers come in saying;
Great post!, awesome post, great article, wow good read etc….. 90% of those people aren’t even reading the post or at the most maybe an extra 10% is skimming the post to leave a little bit of a longer comment.

So my question to you is how were the results when you last used this plugin?
Did the comments get less related to the posts and start sounding spammy as well?

Thank you so much for coming back and I look forward to reading you upcoming posts. Have a wonderful day and God Bless.

It isn’t showing for me on your page? A problem on your end or mine?

Hi Justin.

I think that might be because you’d visited the site in early October and I’d had no commenters by that point – check now, I think it might work :)

Posted by Emma Selley on October 10th, 2008 @ 1:01 pm

I’m a big fan of top commentators plugin. It’s not working on my site so maybe I’ve installed the code wrong.

I like this plugin a lot. I am currently using it on one of my blogs. It is nice because it motivates people to post comments on your blog and it wasn’t very hard to install.

Use Google Adsense to start earning money with your blog, but gradually as your traffic increases, keep adding more and more money making programs to your site.

Hi like your WP theme..nice and clean, not too cluttered like most I’ve seen. You’re into website design? Maybe we should talk some time. Have a little project going…thanks Have a nice evening everyone.

Posted by jbj on July 15th, 2009 @ 2:36 am

This will certainly encourage more people to become involved, I’ve had great success with it on my own site. Though you do tend to get a lot of rubbish comments too

Posted by Jamie on July 29th, 2009 @ 8:36 am

Hello, i guess this is as good of a place as any to post and let you know. I went to subscribe to your RSS feed, and when i clicked it i got an error that said “Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_CONSTANT_ENCAPSED_STRING” followed by other gibberish that scrolled off the screen. I had to force the page to stop loading because it locked up my browser. Cheers.

Wow, what a great practice of commenting as shown here on this post! This is one of my most commented posts (imagine that!) Each of you have given great insight and encouragement to a person who still feels like a beginning blogger (me). This also shows how it is important to look back at the older information of bloggers to find some gems. I think every blogger should include an “MVP” list of sorts on their blog! As David Warlick says, “Information doesn’t travel in straight lines.”

Hi there, nice side! Top Commenter’s is really a great WordPress Widget. I just installed it a couple of days ago, and I’m so excited about what i hopefully will do for my site…
It is really a good thing that you are spreading the word..

All the best from me, and comment you soon.. :)

Thanks for sharing this info. I just learned of it the other day from a friend. Another way to get the plug in is to search for it.

From WP dashboard, left column, go to plug ins, add new and then enter the plug your searching for in the search box. Sometimes, you may have to join the words-no spaces.

Anyway, a great plug in, great info and thanks.

Top Commentators is definitely awesome, its a win-win for both blogger and reader, I say all blogs should definitely use it ;-)

Posted by Car Battery on April 15th, 2010 @ 7:06 pm

Hi newbie here,

What a great site (not for the obvious backlink) but there’s some really great and quality content here. I’ll definitely bookmark this site cause I can learn a lot from this site, and from everyone who participates here.

A special thank you to Emz for sharing “Thou Shall Blog” and “The Best Places to Get Quality Backlink”. Priceless information.

More power to you all, and see you around the “comments”

Posted by REIG on July 22nd, 2010 @ 7:39 am

I’m a huge fan of WordPress pulgins like these, but am mindful of the fact that soem of them can drastically increase loading times of web pages/blog posts, which in turn could hurt some S.E.O factors. However I’ll definitely check this one out…

Posted by Tom Bergman on September 8th, 2010 @ 2:06 am

I really ought to install these plugins on my site! I use the Do Follow plugin, but I really need the “trifecta” – Top Commenters, CommentLuv, and KeywordLuv…

Posted by Bill Davis on October 8th, 2010 @ 8:41 pm

I love the top commenters widget. It encourages people to comment more regularly which means that you can start to get a debate going which is the whole point of a blog. Admittedly you can also get heavily spammed, but I use an IP banning tool designed for wordpress to try and get rid of spammers more quickly.

Posted by UK Search Marketing Guy on October 24th, 2010 @ 8:08 am

Nicely done Emma, a very fantastic way to appreciate the commentators, as soon as I’ve gotten a few comments I’ve installed it myself. Have you considered installing commentluv though?
